ABOUT THE BOOK

TEMPERED

A Reliquarian Life

In the shadow of Mount Kailash in far western Tibet, Michael struggles on the climb over the Pass of Drölma La, confronted by a physical trial demanding more of him than he was prepared for. As the ascent grows more difficult, his body begins to fail him, and he starts to question why he has come. He seeks absolution, not for sins against others, but for those committed against himself.

His path to the holy mountain began decades earlier.

Growing up scarred by his family's emotional neglect, Michael comes to believe that love must be earned. He learns to make himself useful to others, hoping that by giving enough, he might receive the love and acceptance he needs. When his father's first heart attack turns the family roles upside down, eight-year-old Michael assumes responsibilities no child should have to bear. As he grows older, caring becomes a compulsion, empathy becomes codependence, and his desire to protect others gradually consumes his sense of self.

The consequences nearly destroy him. During adolescence, mounting crises threaten his sanity, and despair eventually leads him to contemplate ending his life. He finds the courage to continue, but the beliefs governing his choices remain largely unchanged.

Years later, a devastating succession of losses strips away everything that has defined him. With the death of his last parent, his family abandoning him, his marriage ending, and his home needing to be sold, Michael is forced to confront a painful truth. In trying so desperately to keep others from abandoning him, he has abandoned himself.

What follows is a gradual reconstruction of his understanding of love, identity, and how he has reacted to life.

Through extraordinary encounters across the world, from sacred places and ancient civilizations to remote wildernesses and moments of unexpected human connection, Michael discovers new ways of understanding fear, anger, judgment, presence, perception, and surrender. Each experience offers another perspective on the beliefs he has carried and the possibility of responding to life in new ways.

But understanding these lessons is not the same as adopting them.

A providential invitation summons him years later to Mount Kailash, where the gods of the mountain have determined that the time has come for him to die in order to truly live.

TEMPERED: A Reliquarian Life is a literary memoir of self-discovery, psychological insight, and emotional transformation. It invites readers to reconsider the beliefs that govern their lives, the price of seeking love through self-sacrifice, and what it might mean to discover that their worth was never something they had to earn.

A Note on the Photographs

The photographs throughout this website are predominantly images of places rather than people.

This is a reflection of the limits of photography in earlier decades, when cameras used rolls of film with limited exposures, and so many moments got only one attempt, or they regrettably passed by without being captured. But there is another reason.

Much of TEMPERED takes place in the invisible world of memory, belief, and reflection. Those experiences cannot be photographed. What remains are images of the places and circumstances in which they occurred.
